Top Five Movies of the Summer
Although I didn’t make it to every movie I wanted to see, catching just the blockbusters, here is what I think Hollywood did this summer season.
5. Tropic Thunder - Tom Cruise is hilarious, and Robert Downey Jr. is out of this world. I think this movie has plenty of weaknesses but it’s a comedy. That goes with the genre.
4. Step Brothers - If this movie actually had a plot, it would be considered much better. I didn’t stop laughing the whole movie. Even with Will Ferrel’s massive over-exposure, this movie takes the comedy cake.
3. The Dark Knight - Well, who didn’t like this movie? It had everything in it, minus a good run time (too long) and a realistic batman voice (comical). Even so, this probably is the best traditional comic book movie ever, not including Frank Miller’s 300 and the like.
2. Iron Man - The only reason this movie worked is RDJ. He has totally sold me in the past couple of films. He turned a fairly cheesy character role into slick polished titanium. A perfect blend of humor, action and human interest helped. Even the usual annoying Gwyneth Paltrow was really good.
1. Wall-e - Timeless in my eye. It starts to fail towards the third act when the humans come in but the first two thirds of this movie are so good it doesn’t even matter. It was so touching and real, it’s still hard to believe it is all animation.
Dishonorable mention: Wanted (lame, juvenile), The Incredible Hulk (fake, still annoying), The Love Guru (I didn’t even need to see this movie to know it’s horrible)
